Scholarship Released for 1.91 Lakh Students: Punjab Government Disburses ₹219 Crore

Chandigarh, March 22: In a major initiative to boost higher education and help meritorious students from weaker economic backgrounds, the Punjab government on Wednesday decided to disburse ₹219 crore in scholarship money. This will benefit over 1.91 lakh students across Punjab, one of the largest disbursements of scholarship money in recent times.

The initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that financial conditions do not impede access to quality education. The disbursement will include pending scholarship money for the previous academic session. This will bring much-needed relief to students undertaking post-matriculation, technical, and professional courses.

Scholarship Released for Students

This substantial scholarship boost is expected to benefit a wide cross-section of students, including those from Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, minority communities, and economically weaker sections of society. The disbursement covers multiple scholarship schemes administered by the state's Department of Welfare and Department of Higher Education, ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds receive the financial support they need to continue their education uninterrupted.

Education Minister Daljit Singh Grewal addressed the media to announce the development, emphasizing that the government has placed education at the forefront of its policy agenda. He said, "Education is the driving force behind the development of Punjab. We have been able to clear over 95 percent of the pending scholarship applications. We will clear the rest in the coming weeks. We are not just releasing funds; we're investing in the future of Punjab. Amrit Kaur, a final-year engineering student from Patiala, shared her experience: "I was worried about paying my semester fees on time while also managing my project expenses. Students who excelled in competitive exams at the national level, as well as specific Olympiad competitions based on specific subjects, were prioritized under the merit scholarship category, indicating the state's aspirations of nurturing top-class talent.

Looking ahead, the government has instructed all educational institutions to verify the disbursement status for enrolled students and assist any student who may have been inadvertently left out in the current list. A dedicated helpline has also been established to address grievances and provide guidance on the application process for future scholarship cycles.

The Chief Minister's Office has assured that the administration remains committed to releasing the next tranche of scholarships ahead of the new academic session, aiming to establish a predictable and timely disbursement schedule moving forward.
