The state government of Gujarat has managed to transfer scholarships amounting to Rs 354 crore to more than 13.96 lakh students through the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme. This is a major boost to the state's education sector. This amount has been directly transferred to the bank accounts of the students in a state-level function held in Gandhinagar on Friday, chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The amount is for the students who have enrolled in various schemes such as the SSIP 2.0, Namo Lakshmi Yojana, Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana, Mukhyamantri Gyan Sadhana Merit Scholarship, and the Mukhyamantri Gyan Setu Merit Scholarship. This is another example of the state government's commitment to ensuring that the students do not suffer due to financial difficulties, especially the school-going children belonging to the economically weaker section of the population.

Scholarships to School Students: A Comprehensive Support System

The scholarship distribution event highlighted the Gujarat government's focus on creating a robust support system for school students across the state. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel noted that sustained efforts in the education sector have yielded remarkable results, especially in retaining students in the school system.

"Earlier, the dropout ratio in Gujarat was around 34–38 per cent; today it has come down to just two per cent," Patel stated, crediting initiatives such as Kanya Kelavani Mahotsav and Shala Praveshotsav—programmes originally launched when Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the state—for improving enrollment and retention rates. The Chief Minister also advised students to limit their use of social media to maintain greater focus on their academic pursuits.

Education Minister Pradyuman Vaja emphasised the transparency brought about by the DBT mechanism. "More than 13 lakh students have received over Rs 354 crore directly in their accounts today, which is a transparent step by the government," he said. According to official figures, a cumulative total of Rs 1,871.78 crore has been provided to 27.61 lakh students under these various scholarship schemes to date.

Empowering Girls Through Targeted Schemes

A substantial amount of scholarship funds is also dedicated to empowering girl students. One of the flagship programs for which the funds were released is the Namo Lakshmi Yojana, which provides financial assistance of Rs 50,000 over a period of four years for girl students studying in classes 9 to 12. Under the scheme, students are provided with a stipend along with a lump sum amount for the successful completion of board examinations.

The Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana has also been initiated to encourage girl students to take up science streams of education, thereby filling the gender gaps in the field of science and technology education. With the successful implementation of these programs, it has also been reported that there has been a 6-7 percent increase in the number of female students in schools across the state. An amount of Rs 1,500 crore has also been set apart for these programs for the coming year.

Transforming Educational Landscape

The scholarship initiative is part of a larger transformation in Gujarat's education sector. Under the 'Mission School of Excellence', substantial investments have been made in upgrading school infrastructure. The state's recent budget for 2026-27 allocated Rs 3,055 crore for upgrading classrooms under this mission, along with Rs 827 crore for students in private schools under the Right to Education Act.

The government has also focused on strengthening teacher availability, with 12,708 teachers appointed in primary schools and 9,400 in secondary schools over the past year. These appointments ensure that students receive quality guidance as they prepare for board examinations and competitive tests like the Olympiad, which require strong foundational knowledge.

Gujarat's consistent focus on education has earned it the top ranking in startup rankings for five consecutive years, with students being provided platforms for innovation from the school level itself. This early exposure to problem-solving and critical thinking equips students to excel not only in academics but also in national and international Olympiad competitions, where Gujarat students have increasingly begun to make their mark.

Long-term Vision for Educational Excellence

The state's commitment to education goes beyond scholarships. The latest budget announcement revealed a comprehensive education budget of Rs 63,184 crore. This includes infrastructure development, research facilities, and student welfare schemes. This also includes providing scholarships to over 90,000 students under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavalamban Yojana (MYSY) scheme. In addition, the state will also establish new colleges and research parks to encourage academic-industry collaborations. As the state progresses further, the focus will continue to be on developing an ecosystem that allows students to thrive. The scholarship schemes, along with infrastructure development and innovation support, will enable students to concentrate on their studies without any financial burden. This will be applicable to students preparing for board exams, competing in Olympiads, or working towards innovative startup ideas. The dropout rate of students has now come down to just two percent. The girls’ student strength has been consistently increasing. The educational initiatives of Gujarat are now a model that other states need to emulate. The DBT model of disbursing scholarships will ensure that the funds reach the beneficiaries. This will enable quality education to reach all school students in the state
