In a remarkable academic feat likened to an educational olympiad, students from 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh have achieved a perfect 100% success rate in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examinations for 2026. According to the detailed results released by the Examination Regulatory Authority (ERA), this milestone reflects a powerful surge in both academic excellence and program awareness across the state.

A total of 14,925 students have qualified for the prestigious scholarship this year, coming remarkably close to meeting Uttar Pradesh’s allocated quota of 15,143 seats. The scholarship, a vital central government initiative aimed at retaining talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, provides a monthly stipend of ₹1,000 (totaling ₹12,000 annually) from Class 9 through Class 12.

The examination, conducted for Class 8 students enrolled in government, government-aided, and local body schools, saw a significant increase in successful candidates this year. Results were officially announced on February 28. However, officials noted that despite this widespread success, 218 scholarship slots remain unfilled, underscoring the ongoing challenge of ensuring every eligible child is reached.

The Star Performers: Districts Where Everyone Won

A deep dive into the district-wise data reveals an inspiring story of complete success. In 13 districts, every single scholarship seat available was filled by a deserving student. These districts stand as a testament to the growing grassroots efforts to promote educational opportunities:

● Bahraich – 172 scholars ● Ballia – 251 scholars ● Balrampur – 118 scholars ● Chandauli – 204 scholars ● Deoria – 235 scholars ● Ghazipur – 184 scholars ● Kaushambi – 105 scholars ● Kushinagar – 254 scholars ● Lakhimpur Kheri – 318 scholars ● Mau – 147 scholars ● Mirzapur – 233 scholars ● Sonbhadra – 159 scholars ● Varanasi – 269 scholars

Education department officials attribute this success to a collective effort, stating that these figures reflect a growing awareness among students and teachers about the importance of the NMMS scheme.

A Closer Look at the NMMS Exam

The NMMS scheme, launched by the central government back in 2008, was created with a simple yet powerful goal: to reduce the dropout rate after Class 8 by providing f inancial support to bright students from economically weaker sections. Across India, approximately one lakh students benefit from this program each year. For the 2026-27 academic session, the exam was held on November 9, 2025. Organized by the Prayagraj-based ERA, the test took place across 394 centres in the state. Out of over 1.57 lakh students who registered, more than 1.21 lakh (about 77%) showed up to take the exam. While this shows strong interest, the fact that over 36,000 registered students were absent points to a challenge that authorities are keen to address.

Who Could Apply?

The opportunity was open to students who passed Class 7 in the 2024-25 session with a minimum of 55% marks. In a move to ensure inclusivity, SC and ST students were given a relaxation, requiring only 50% marks. All applicants had to be enrolled in Class 8 for the 2025-26 academic year in a government-recognized school. A Look Back: Progress Over the Years Officials have noted that this year's results are among the most impressive in recent memory. The number of selected students has been steadily climbing, from just 6,456 in 2022 to 14,090 in 2023, 14,896 in 2024, and 14,493 in 2025, before reaching this year's total of 14,925. While the 100% success in 13 districts and the overall increase in selections are cause for celebration, the 218 vacant seats serve as a gentle reminder that the mission to support every eligible student is an ongoing journey. The state education department remains committed to spreading the word, hoping that next year, every single scholarship finds a deserving home.
